Enjoy the views of weather's most stunning events. See tornadoes from around the nation filmed by storm chasers and storm spotters, and people who happened to be in the right place at the right time. Also you can see the calmer side of these storms, such as the mamatus clouds which can look like something from a sci-fi movie. SEE several types of severe and non severe weather phenomena. I'm still in the process of building this blogsite, so enjoy what I have so far, while I build this site up.

Why do I chase storms?

I became interested in tornadoes when I was in the third grade. I saw that tornado scene in the "Wizard of Oz." I remembered how I was so amazed with that scene, it was the first image I ever saw of a tornado. Even though it turned out to be a fake tornado, it turned out to be the best screen effects of a tornado for a long time. I still say it's better than some of the tornadoes in the movie "Twister." My interest increased when I saw a film called "Change of the Goddess" in the fifth grade, which was a science film clip about the violent occurances which nature can dish out. When they got to the hurricanes and the tornadoes it really got my attention. Ever since these days from my childhood, I always wanted to see a hurricane and a tornado. I finally saw my first hurricane when Fran hit N.C. in 1996. And after experiencing Floyd and Isabel, I had enough of the hurricanes. Now I was itching to see a tornado. N.C. has tornadoes, but the odds of seeing one, even if you're chasing are so slim, because they are more times than not, rain wrapped. So I made up my mind to move to Oklahoma, and chase storms in the Plains, the views are so wide open. Perfect for viewing a tornado. I have chased for two seasons now, although 2008 wasn't a full season for me, because I didn't get my first chase in until May 22. I caught a tornado on the very first thunderstorm I went after. It was the tornado that crossed I-70 in Collyer Kansas. Then I got my second tornado on the second storm I chased, it was the one that hit Wakeeney Kansas less than an hour after the Collyer tornado. Next day I saw the Lane County Kansas tornado, and on my third day I saw the two Orlando Oklahoma tornadoes. This was awesome for me, because I was told there would be lots of boredom, and on top of that, a lot of chasers never see one and eventually give up. Because I always wanted to chase, I put a lot of hours just studying the videos of tornadoes and radar loops from tornadic events, and the dividends payed off. Tornadoes can have so many shapes in their appearance, so each chase comes out to be a different experience. Also, if the storm doesn't produce a tornado, you can still see other things that are spectacular. There is a lot learned when I chase also, even learning how to use a camera more like a professional. This is part of the reasons I'm a storm chaser.

WHO SAID A TORNADO CAN'T SPIN CLOCKWISE?

A tornado can spin clockwise. Even though they commonly spin counter-clockwise north of the equator, they are also known to spin clockwise(anti-cyclonic). One of the El Reno Oklahoma tornadoes on May 24-2006 was an anti-cyclonic tornado. And it can even happen with the stronger tornadoes. All anti-cyclonic tornadoes are not of the weaker variety. And if you go south of the equator, the majority of the tornadoes will spin clockwise. Now Hurricanes(tropical storms), they are a different storm. They will always spin counter-clockwise north of the equator, and spin clockwise south of the equator. These are also known as typhoon, willy willy, cyclone, and probably a few other names depending on where they are located in this world of many languages. Because of the earth's rotation, tropical storms will always spin in the direction according to what side of the equator they're on.
